Surfing in New Jersey: Surf Breaks and Everything in Between
Welcome to the Garden State…Home of the “Guido” and land of the fist pump. Natives here go down the shore in order to go to the beach. People tawk funny and order “pies” when they want a pizza.
If its waves you want, don’t plan a trip in the summer months. While NJ does get waves they tend to be weak wind swells in the summer; which aren’t awful but it’s not worth a surf trip. Early Tropical Storms and Hurricanes are always fun but not a regular occurrence this time of year.
Summertime is great for two things people watching and traffic. With hundreds of miles of coast line you can enjoy a relaxing night in a quite Bed and Breakfast or you can fist pump till your arm falls off and your ear drums explode. A lack of waves and an influx of people into the water =? You do the math.
On the other hand if you want to experience Jersey’s unforgiving beach break come in the Fall. Large Hurricane swells ignite virtually every break, the water temperature is awesome, and the swells are very consistent. Not to mention the beach is free and parking is more available.
If you are in search of frigid water and empty line ups then Winter is your season. While it is slightly less consistent than the fall it is just as good. There is nothing better than trekking across the snow covered beach to surf cold intense waves with only you and a few of your friends.
Before you pass judgment and call Jersey the “Armpit of America” come check it out. There is something here for everyone.
